If your child is overly sensitive to tags in their shirt, refuses certain foods, or seems overwhelmed by everyday sounds and situations, you are not imagining it, and you are not alone. At Sense Able Brain, we help children make sense of the world around them so they can feel calmer, more confident, and more comfortable in their own skin.
What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder, often called SPD, means that the brain has difficulty receiving, organizing, or responding to sensory information, both from the outside world and from inside the body. Think of it like a traffic jam in the nervous system. Signals come in, but they do not get sorted and routed the way they should. For one child, that might look like a complete meltdown over the feeling of a seam in a sock. For another, it might mean craving so much physical input that they cannot stop crashing into furniture or people. Neither child is being dramatic or difficult. Their nervous systems are genuinely struggling to process what most of us do automatically.
SPD is not a formal medical diagnosis that a therapy practice assigns. It is a pattern of responses that a qualified therapist can identify and address through targeted treatment. Many children with sensory challenges have no other diagnosis at all, while others may have multiple diagnoses. Either way, support is available.
Signs You Might Be Noticing at Home or School
Some of the most common signs families notice include:
- Becoming inconsolable when clothing feels wrong, refusing certain fabrics, or insisting on seamless socks no matter the weather
- Covering their ears at sounds that do not seem loud to anyone else, or shutting down in busy places like grocery stores or birthday parties
- Seeking intense physical input constantly, through spinning, jumping, crashing, or chewing on everything in sight
- Clumsiness that seems out of proportion for their age, or poor awareness of where their body is in space
- Difficulty settling after transitions
- Daily mealtime battles because of food textures, smells, or temperatures
These are not behavior problems. These are signs that your child’s nervous system needs support, and recognizing them is the first important step.
Why Sensory Challenges Can Affect Everything
Sensory regulation is not just one piece of the puzzle; it is one of the pillars the rest of development is built on. When a child’s nervous system is constantly in overdrive or chronically under-responsive, it is much harder for them to focus, learn, connect with others, or manage their emotions. A child who cannot tolerate the feeling of sitting in a chair is going to struggle to pay attention in school. A child who is overwhelmed by the sound of classroom chatter cannot take in what the teacher is saying.
Feeding difficulties, sleep struggles, emotional outbursts, social withdrawal, and learning challenges all frequently trace back to a dysregulated sensory system. Addressing sensory processing at its root can unlock real, lasting progress in all of these areas. That is why we take a whole-child approach rather than treating symptoms one at a time.
How Sense Able Brain Helps Children with Sensory Challenges
Our Occupational Therapists specialize in sensory integration and sensory-motor processing, using individualized, evidence-informed techniques to help your child’s nervous system learn to receive and respond to sensory information more effectively. Sessions in our sensory gyms are playful and engaging while doing meaningful therapeutic work beneath the surface.
We also offer a range of additional services that work together to address sensory challenges from multiple angles:
- Sound Learning Therapy using the Safe and Sound Protocol, a research-backed auditory intervention designed to calm the nervous system and reduce auditory sensitivity
- Laser Light Therapy (QRI), which supports primitive reflex integration and the sensory foundation the brain builds on, for children whose sensory challenges are tied to a neurological foundation that needs strengthening
- Bodywork Therapy, which provides fascial and regulatory support to help the body release patterns of tension that can keep the nervous system stuck in a state of overwhelm
Together, these services create a layered, root-cause approach that addresses sensory challenges from multiple angles at once.
