Postural & Coordination Support in Lutz, FL

If your child seems clumsier than other kids their age, slumps constantly, or struggles to keep up physically, that is your instinct telling you something worth listening to. These challenges are real, and the right support can make an enormous difference.

What Postural and Coordination Challenges Actually Are

Postural control is your body’s ability to hold itself upright and stable without constant conscious effort. It is what allows a child to sit at a desk without slouching, stand in line without leaning on the wall, or carry a backpack without everything going sideways. Coordination is the ability to sequence and combine movements smoothly, so that reaching, throwing, climbing, and writing all feel natural rather than effortful.

Both of these skills develop from a foundation of sensory-motor integration and the maturation of primitive reflexes. When that foundation is incomplete, the child has to work much harder than their peers just to do ordinary physical things. Over time, that extra effort is exhausting, and it can lead to avoidance, frustration, and falling behind in ways that extend well beyond the playground.

Signs a Parent Might Notice at Home or School

Some of the signs of postural and coordination challenges are easy to spot once you know what to look for. Your child might include:

  • Slumping dramatically at the dinner table or school desk, not because they are being lazy, but because their body is genuinely fatiguing from holding itself up
  • Bumping into doorframes or knocking things over regularly
  • Seeming to have no sense of where their body is in space
  • Difficulty balancing on one foot
  • Struggling with sports or playground equipment that peers manage easily
  • An awkward or tight pencil grip
  • Avoidance of physical play or gym class
  • A general quality of seeming unsteady or “floppy” that teachers and family members sometimes comment on

If several of these sound like your child, those observations matter.

Why These Challenges Are Often Missed

Postural and coordination difficulties can be surprisingly easy for adults to overlook or explain away. Children who struggle in these areas are sometimes described as lazy, clumsy by nature, or just “not athletic.” They may be told to sit up straight as if the solution is simply trying harder, or assured that they will grow out of it without anyone investigating why the challenge is there in the first place.

The reality is that retained primitive reflexes, low muscle tone, and underdeveloped vestibular and proprioceptive processing are common underlying contributors to these challenges. A skilled Occupational Therapist can assess for all of these factors and build a plan that actually addresses the root cause rather than asking the child to compensate indefinitely.

How Sense Able Brain Helps Children Move with Confidence

Occupational Therapy is at the center of how we support children with postural and coordination challenges. Our OTs work on gross motor skills, balance, postural endurance, whole-body coordination, and primitive reflex integration, all of the building blocks that allow a child to feel steady and capable in their own body.

For children who need deeper support, we also offer:

  • Laser Light Therapy using the QRI protocol, an adjunct approach that supports primitive reflex integration at a neurological level
  • Bodywork Therapy, addressing fascial constrictions and low muscle tone that can hold a child’s posture and movement patterns back, even when other interventions have not fully resolved the issue

We look at the whole child and build a care plan that fits their specific needs.

Your Child Deserves to Feel at Home in Their Body

Postural and coordination challenges are not a life sentence. When the right foundational work is done, children who once slumped, stumbled, and avoided physical activity can find a new sense of ease and confidence in how they move through the world. That shift is worth pursuing.

If your child has been told they will grow out of it and they have not, or if your gut has been telling you something is off even when no one else seems concerned, we would love to hear from you.
