ADD/ADHD Support for Children in Lutz, FL

Behind every child who cannot seem to focus, sit still, or hold it together is a nervous system that is working overtime. At Sense Able Brain, we dig beneath the label to find what is actually driving your child’s attention and regulation challenges, because when you address the root, real change becomes possible.

What Is ADD/ADHD, and What Might Be Underneath It?

ADD and ADHD are terms used to describe a pattern of challenges with attention, impulse control, and self-regulation that show up consistently across settings and significantly affect a child’s daily functioning. A formal diagnosis comes from a physician or psychologist, and that process matters. But a diagnosis alone does not always tell you why your child’s brain and body are struggling to regulate.

What we often find, and what research increasingly supports, is that sensory processing difficulties, retained primitive reflexes, and nervous system dysregulation are contributing factors that sit underneath the attention and behavior challenges. These are areas where occupational therapy and neurodevelopmental approaches can make a meaningful difference, not as a replacement for medical care, but as a powerful complement to it. When the nervous system gets the support it needs, attention and behavior often follow.

What Parents of Kids with ADHD Often See at Home and School

If you are parenting a child with ADHD or suspected ADHD, some of these scenes will probably feel very familiar. Your child cannot sit through a meal, a read-aloud, or a short car ride without bouncing, interrupting, or completely tuning out. They can, however, spend four hours deep in a video game or a favorite hobby without coming up for air. That is not laziness or defiance. That is a nervous system that struggles to regulate attention without a strong dopamine hook.

At school or during homeschool, you might notice several patterns showing up together:

  • Forgetting multi-step instructions the moment they are given
  • Losing materials constantly
  • Melting down when it is time to switch tasks
  • Handwriting that is a persistent battle
  • Organizational skills that feel years behind expectations
  • Small frustrations that explode into big emotional reactions
  • Sensory seeking behaviors like spinning, crashing, chewing on clothing, or touching everything in reach

These are not character flaws. They are clues about what the nervous system needs.

The Sensory and Nervous System Connection

Many of the behaviors associated with ADHD overlap significantly with what happens when a child’s sensory processing system is disorganized or when primitive reflexes from infancy have not fully integrated. When a child’s nervous system cannot accurately process sensory input, the brain struggles to filter what is important and what is not. Everything feels equally urgent, equally loud, equally demanding of attention.

Retained reflexes can contribute to restlessness, poor posture during seated tasks, difficulty crossing the midline, and emotional reactivity. A nervous system stuck in a low-level threat response will keep a child in a state of hypervigilance that looks a lot like distractibility or impulsivity. Understanding this does not mean we dismiss the ADHD experience. It means we give you a fuller picture so that therapy can actually work at the level where change happens.

How Sense Able Brain Supports Children with ADD/ADHD

Our Occupational Therapists work with children with attention and regulation challenges by addressing the sensory integration, executive function, and nervous system foundations that underlie behavior. That includes hands-on work with sensory processing, reflex integration, regulation strategies, and fine motor skills including handwriting. For many children, this is where the biggest shifts happen.

We also offer additional therapies that work alongside OT to support the whole child:

  • Sound Learning Therapy using the Safe and Sound Protocol, an evidence-based auditory intervention that works directly on nervous system regulation and can reduce the hypervigilance that keeps so many kids with ADHD stuck in overdrive
  • Laser Light Therapy using the QRI protocol, which supports reflex integration and can have a meaningful impact on attention and focus
  • Bodywork Therapy, which provides body-based regulation support that helps calm the nervous system at a foundational level

Every child who comes to Sense Able Brain gets a plan built around their whole picture, not just their diagnosis.

Starting Without Certainty, That Is Okay

Some families arrive at Sense Able Brain with a formal ADHD diagnosis in hand. Others arrive because a teacher flagged something, their pediatrician raised a concern, or their own gut has been telling them for years that something is going on. Both paths are completely valid here, and you do not need a label to get started.

What we ask is that you tell us what you are seeing. Describe a hard morning, a school struggle, a meltdown that left everyone shaken. That is more than enough to begin. We will take it from there and help you figure out what kind of support makes the most sense for your child. Reach out to us today, and let us have that conversation.
