Sound Learning Therapy (Safe & Sound Protocol) in Lutz, FL

When learning is hard, it is often not about intelligence or willpower. It’s about regulation.

Sound Learning Therapy uses the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP), a gentle listening program with specially filtered music to help children regulate, listen, integrate, and learn. When a child feels overwhelmed, anxious, stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, or is too dysregulated to focus and connect, we work on the brain-body foundation that learning depends on.

If your child’s brain is stuck in protective mode, it is busy trying to keep them safe. That makes it harder to listen, follow directions, retain new information, participate socially, and stay emotionally steady. Sound Learning is a neuroscience-based therapeutic program designed to support calmer bodies, better emotional regulation, auditory processing, attention, and the readiness children need to thrive academically and socially.

This program is for children ages 3 and up who are sensitive to sound, anxious, easily overwhelmed, chronically dysregulated, trauma-affected, or struggling to feel calm and connected enough to participate in therapy, school, family life, or friendships. Here at Sense Able Brain, Our Sound Learning therapy intervention is often included in our Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy sessions as part of a broader whole-child approach. The Sound Learning Therapy Program allows you, the parent, to access this technology to help your child under the supervision of an experienced Occupational Therapist or Speech Therapist.

What Is the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)?

Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, music-based listening intervention that uses filtered sound to support emotional regulation, attention, auditory processing, social interaction, and learning readiness. SSP is a research-informed auditory intervention developed from the work of Dr. Stephen Porges and his Polyvagal Theory, which explains how the nervous system determines, often below conscious awareness through a process called neuroception, whether an environment feels safe or threatening.

During SSP, your child listens to specially filtered music through headphones while we carefully guide you to pace the program based on how their nervous system responds. It’s non-invasive and calm by design. There are no exercises to perform. Your child simply listens, and maybe engages in a quiet activity while changes are being made in the nervous system’s baseline sense of safety. The goal is to move forward at the speed that their nervous system is able to shift from “defensive” toward calm, connection, listening, and engagement. The SSP is gentle, but is therapeutic, and requires parent support to pace the demands made on the brain and nervous system from the music.

When the nervous system feels safe and steady, the brain becomes more open to learning, listening, and growth. That shift is what makes everything else, therapy, school, relationships, easier to access.

Do You Integrate SSP with the Other Therapies You Provide?

Families often ask how Sound Learning fits in with the other therapies we offer. The short answer is that the SSP is one tool that supports childhood neurodevelopment for better regulation, learning, and connections with loved ones. The SSP works directly through the auditory system and the social engagement system, gently helping your child become more available for regulation, engagement, communication, and learning. In addition to being a stand-alone program, it is another tool we can stack in our Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy sessions, with or without the other interventions we provide such as the QRI Laser, bodywork, or frequencies. This allows your child access to all of the interventions that support the growth of his or her unique neurodevelopmental needs in one Plan of Care.

When indicated, the SSP can be a strong foundational tool to help build a felt sense of safety and security so that our other interventions can be utilized to make progress more quickly on a more regulated foundation.

Challenges the Safe & Sound Protocol Can Help Address

Sound Learning Therapy may be a supportive option for children experiencing:

Learning challengesAuditory hypersensitivity / sound sensitivitySensory processing disorder / sensory sensitivitiesEmotional and behavioral dysregulationAnxiety / hyper-vigilance / frustration intolerancePediatric PTSDAutism spectrum disorder (social engagement and regulation component)ADD / ADHD (distractibility and regulation component)Developmental delays (where nervous system regulation is a barrier to progress)Difficulty with recall of previously learned material

A free phone consultation with our team will provide guidance as to whether an evaluation to determine if the SSP is an appropriate fit for your child’s specific needs.

Signs the Safe & Sound Protocol Might Be Right for Your Child

Every child’s path to success looks different, but there are some common signs that a child’s nervous system may be stuck in a state of protection rather than connection. You might notice your child:

  • Covers their ears constantly or reacts strongly to everyday sounds
  • Melts down or shuts down in noisy, busy environments
  • Seems chronically hypervigilant, on edge, or unable to settle
  • Struggles to make eye contact or connect socially with others
  • Has a history of trauma, medical stress, or prolonged dysregulation
  • Has difficult listening, focusing, or following directions when the environment feels overwhelming
  • Avoids groups, classes, therapy tasks, or social settings because they feel insurmountable
  • Needs a long time to recover after school, appointments, errands, or loud events
  • Seems bright and capable, but learning breaks down when their body is dysregulated

If several of these sound familiar, we understand how frustrating it can be to watch your child struggle and not know how to help them. The Sound Learning Therapy may be worth exploring, especially if your child seems capable but cannot consistently access learning, connection, or calm because their body is working too hard to feel safe.

How It Works

We begin with a therapy evaluation to determine whether the Sound Learning Therapy program is the right fit and whether your child is ready for the program. If it is the right fit and your child is ready, we bring you and your child in for the foundational listening session to provide instruction and guidance. After that, you continue the program at home with remote SSP access for 3 months and up to 11 optional parent support sessions with your child’s clinician at no additional charge.

Throughout the process, your OT or SLP stays involved, guiding the pacing of the protocol and helping you interpret what you’re seeing at home so the program stays tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Support sessions may be virtual, in-person, or asynchronous by email depending on what the therapist determines is best for your family. We strongly encourage your child to be present when appropriate so we can help you recognize subtle signs of dysregulation and use strategies that work for your child in real life. Sound Learning builds the foundation your child needs to grow, not just emotionally, but academically. When regulation comes first, real learning can finally follow.
